When You Buy a Stranger a Coke...

The assignment to buy a stranger a coke had me a little out of my element! I was nervous as to how a stranger would react to my offering to buy them a coke. I tried to imagine what I would think if a total stranger walked over and offered to buy me a coke, or even insisted. My initial response would probably be "make it a diet and I'm in!" Then I would probably realize what was going on and think about how I can buy my own soda. I would probably take back my initial statement and make a big awkward mess of the situation. Luckilyyyyyyy, Sarah's reaction was a lot less awkward, and a lot more rewarding. I was in 7-11 and I saw a girl near the drinks. I walked over and made small talk with her. Asked her how her day was going and things like that. She seemed a little taken aback, as people don't usually get personal with you in the convenient store. Then I cut to the chase and told her that I would love to buy her a coke. She looked a little bit puzzled. She said that was nice, but I really didn't need to. I explained that I had buy someone something for class and I would love for it to be her. She didn't want a soda (which I can't fully understand?!?!), but said she would really appreciate a water. So I grabbed a water bottle and we walked to the front of the store. She said thank you about 23 times and was so appreciative for the water. It made me realize how doing so little goes so far. Here is a girl who didn't even particularly want or need a water bottle, yet she was so grateful for it. It cost me about $1.39 and three minutes of my time. It got me thinking about what $20.00 and one hour could do for a person. Even though it was such a small and simple contribution to this sweet girl, it felt great to serve. It was rewarding and a win-win for both of us. There truly is such joy in serving, no matter how simple the act.
